Excellence in Leadership (Solo Class, Go!)

What does excellence in leadership look like?

A. Marble statue

B. Corporate headshot

C. Forbes magazine cover

D. Teaching a Solo Lesson

If you answered "D," then you are correct!

Sylvi taught her first solo lesson this afternoon today under the shade of an oak tree in Linden Hills... a confidence kihap distance from the Pershing Rec Center. It was a special day, yet she had no idea when she woke that she would have to teach her first class of Tiny Tigers as part of her final requirement to test for her black leadership uniform.

Going the Distance

According to neighbors, Sylvi's skills have garnered neighbors attention. One student, Harrison, has taken to her tutelage. According to Harrison's Mom, "We just gave her an hourly raise."

I didn't inquire to the specifics, however I'm assuming this young martial artist has uncovered a gem in marketing and business acumen for her martial art / neighborhood community involvement interests... a sign of a leader.

Sylvi has been working with the neighbor kids who also participate in the program to help them along in their material. Now that is a sign of a going the full distance! You go, girl!

Earlier this morning I posted a opportunity for a free private lesson... an incentive for parents who engaged on Facebook and Twitter. I like parents engaged in their kids' life, and reward accordingly. Their nugget:

LakesATA

Sylvi showed up. Slightly nervous, but at least a few minutes early... always noted as a bonus in my book.

Her father had prepped her, knowing there could be a new challenge approaching. He follows Lakes Martial Arts on Facebook.

"You must teach your first 15 minute class," I instructed her.

She took a big breath in, exhaled.

"What equipment would you like to choose?" I asked. I offered her a list on the available equipment she could choose from: Kicker pads, blocking pads, the body shield, re-breakable boards, and thunder paper.

"I have a few ideas," she said with confidence.

Sylvi started martial arts in Minneapolis with Lakes Martial Arts almost three years ago. She upholds a high work ethic and tries her best in class. Lower rank students look up to her. She works hard to earn money for extra private lessons. She assisted almost 35 classes (that is 7 stars!). And she will be the very first to test for her leadership uniform (the black one) on July 1.

The requirements to earn a Black Uniform?

  • Demonstration of knowledge of all forms & one-steps up to current rank
  • Memorization and practice of the Ten Class Management Skills and Nine Qualities of Technique
  • Assisting at least 25 classes and earned both the SWAT (Superior Winning Attitude Team) patch and the Delta Team patch (earned 5 stars / 25 classes).
  • Demonstrating Positive Mental Attitude in training at all times
  • Willingness to engage with the community to share talents (for example, volunteering at the Bully Prevention Seminar)
  • Solo class instruction

That last requirement would send nervous chills to most black belts... a task requiring confidence, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

Yet, Sylvi rose to the occasion and did her best... demonstrating excellence in leadership and knowledge of all her material! Kudos!

I am proud to say Sylvi met all expectations and passed her final requirement before testing. The final requirement is to demonstrate the knowledge in front of a judging panel and sooner than later she will have that coveted black uniform!!! Good luck, Sylvi!
